The Drying Center^TM

Electric clothes dryers haven't changed much since they were introduced around 1915.

True, modern clothes dryers include such features as electronic sensors that detect when clothes are dry, electronic controls and various temperature and drying cycles ... but the basic mechanism has remained much the same.

Clothes dryers do a great job of drying clothes by tumbling them in a drum while blowing heat over the clothes, but many modern fabrics and articles of clothing just don't do well in conventional dryers.

As if doing the laundry wasn't bad enough with mounds of dirty clothes organized for proper wash loads, flat-drying sweaters and other delicates, drip-dry items on hangers, and dry clean only materials that need freshening, all make for a mess that's hard to hide.

In our article, Efficient Laundry Room Design, we suggest installing a shower stall in the laundry, with a retractable clothes line and a vent fan to hang drip-dry clothing, along with placing rails on either side of the shower that can be used to hold removable mesh shelves to drip dry sweaters and other items that should be dried flat. (The shower will also come in handy for washing the dog, golf clubs, emergency clean up, and more.)
