Bathtubs & Accessories Elderly , incapacitated, or those with special needs often find bathtubs difficult to maneuver. There are models available that are ADA compliant that enable easier access and egress. Many people are installing these models in their home in anticipation of possible future needs. Bathtubs Ideally, tubs serving special needs should be larger than the typical 5' tub. Longer (66" as opposed to 60") and deeper (over 20"), and wider (36" or more) to allow for better comfort, maneuverability and immersion in the water. It should also be accessible from at least 3 sides. This allows both bather and caregiver ample access room. Below are just a few samples of what is available.
Rails incorporated in the tub design, or firmly fixed to the wall will provide the needed safety.
Horizontal rails that are incorporated into the tub design not only provide additional leverage and security for entering and exiting the tub, but also eliminate potential obstacles encountered when using clamp-on side rails. One-Piece Tub/Shower Combinations
Factory installed grab bars are available in nylon, and polished or brushed stainless steel. The units have a slip-resistant floor for added safety. Depending on the manufacturer, seats are either drop down, or multi-position and removable. The FreewillTM Barrier-free Bath and Shower Module by Kohler, shown at the right, is also available in a whirlpool model. Transfer Benches A transfer bench aids entry and exit, and is ideal for those who have difficulty standing for extended periods of time while bathing or showering. Some tubs feature a wide shelf on which to sit before getting into the tub. Caregivers find these tubs easy to use and easy on their backs.
Many transfer benches offer features such as space for shower curtain placement, adjustable seat height, and slip resistant seats and backs. Options
A welcome addition to the bath is Kohler's removable bath/whirlpool pillow is comfortable addition to any bath or whirlpool not supplied with pillows.
