Floor mounted sunken tubs are easy to get into but very difficult to get out of without standing up first, and then they present a high step to climb out of. This can be hazardous for all people, but they're especially impractical for older people or the infirmed. They also present architectural problems in their construction. As an alternative, most drop-ins are deck-mounted in a separate frame in much the same way that sinks are installed in countertops; this requires extra carpentry and tile work, and this adds to their cost. Deck-mounted built-ins are comfortable for sitting and soaking feet. Built-in tubs are easier to clean around unless they're corner units, but the plumbing is concealed behind a wall in case they ever need maintenance and that could add to the expense of repair.
