Hydromassage and HBO

Baths were once Saturday night rituals when workers would wash away the grime of the week to prepare for church on Sunday. You had to hurry so the others in the family could take their turns. Now, each family member has his own bathroom and can take as long as he or she wants.

Whirlpools have replaced tubs in the master bath. And as time passes, luxury features are continually added to them. Features such as multiple jets, heaters, built-in headrests, programmable controls, bigger wells, and exotic trim have become commonplace. Hydrotherapy is the current trend, using forced air jets instead of re-circulating water. This improves sanitation and allows for scented oils to be introduced to the water for aroma therapy.

They come in every shape and size, with room for two being common, but the predominant colors are white, white, and white. Few people are eager to invest that much money in a fixture that will look dated in a few years, and white never goes out of style. They require a lot of floor space, so people who prefer showers tend to go with smaller units, but they still want them in their home.

In contrast to showers, which tend to be designed for fun, whirlpools are increasingly aimed toward hydro massage, or soothing aching bodies. Some people choose to relax in their tub and watch TV, read a book or magazine, or just listen to their favorite CD. It's an activity that requires more time than effort, but can make a lousy day seem pleasant.
