How Your House Works
Residential Gas Distribution System
The natural or propane gas plumbing supply line distributes gas from the point of entrance into the home, to the main operating valve at each natural gas appliance (water heater, range, etc.) within the home, or outside in the case of natural gas BBQ grills, fire pits, pool heaters, etc.
There are three types of pipes that are allowed in residential construction for natural gas and propane:
- flexible stainless steel pipes
- black steel
- soft copper pipes (type K or type L thickness)
The thickness of the pipes being used for the natural gas or propane will also depend on whether or not you have a high pressure or low pressure system.
Gas leaks are deadly!
Gas lines and gas appliances should only be installed by a licensed contractor.
Local Building Codes:
Natural gas and propane pipes are normally only installed by Professional Plumbing Contractors,
However, local building codes may allow other qualified professionals to do all, some of the work, such as:
HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) contractors and/or Appliance Repair contractors.
Local building codes mandate requirements for the type of pipe to be used for natural or propane gas, and the type of connectors for movable appliances (such as dryers and ranges, as well as the location of manual gas shut-off valves, and/or the use of automatic safety-valves.
Safety
In case of an emergency, everyone should know the location of all shut-off valves in their building.
