The Safe Way to Thaw Frozen Pipes

Special Winter Advisory: Jan 2005

Frozen Water Lines across the southern US.
The frigid air mass passing over the south is lowering temperatures to levels not seen in many years. In some cases, pipes may be freezing in the ground.

Since pipes in the southern US are buried closer to ground level, there is a greater chance the main supply pipe will freeze at the point where it enters your home. We suggest you apply heat directly to that pipe if possible, from the point where it leaves the ground to where it enters your house or mobile home.

If you can not access the pipe, you would need a heater with a strong blower, such as a construction site torpedo type heater. Many rental companies have them.

If you have followed these and our suggestions in the article How to Safely Thaw Frozen Pipes, and still have no water, your pipes may be freezing in the ground, before they get to the house. If that's the case, it may be difficult if not impossible to thaw them.

Your local plumbers may have a ready solution. If our suggestions do not solve your problem, we recommend you call a licensed plumbing contractor.
