Water Conservation

Water conservation starts at home, where our daily use of faucets, showerheads, dishwashers and toilets all add up to some unsightly numbers.

Fortunately, you can dramatically reduce your water usage through helpful tips you can use throughout your home.

In The BathroomWater Saved
Reduce Shower time to 5 minutes 3-7 gallons per shower
Replace older, less efficient toilets with 1.28-gallon
High-Efficiency Toilets (HETs)
up to 16,500 gallons of water per year
Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or shaving 4-10 gallons a day
Swap out your 2.75 gpm showerhead with a 1.75 water-conserving showerhead more than 7,700 gallons of water per year
Use the wastebasket & not the toilet for disposing of tissues, etc. 3-7 gallons per flush

Close the tub drain before turning on the water 3 gallons or more
Fill the bathtub only halfway 5 gallons or more
Saves in hot water costs too!
Fix leaky faucets and install faucets with water-saving aerators to effortlessly save hundreds of gallons of water per year

In the Kitchen Water Saved
Run the garbage disposal only when necessary 2-7 gallons per minute

Rinse dishes in a full sink of water, rather than under running water 8-15 gallons per day
Saves in hot water costs too!
Run the dishwasher only when full up to 15 gallons per load
Saves energy costs too!
Wash vegetables & fruit in a basin of water, and use a vegetable brush to remove dirt 2-4 gallons per day

In the LaundryWater Saved
Consider purchasing a front-load washing machine.
Traditional washing machines use 22-25 gallons per load
Run the washing machine only when full and adjust the water level setting carefully. Saves in hot water costs too!
Use the appropriate water level and load size on the washing machine when doing laundry.

Outdoors
Use a broom rather than a hose to clean off driveways, steps and sidewalks
Water your garden during the coolest part of the day, generally in the morning, and avoid watering on windy days.
Landscape with native or low-water plants to significantly reduce water usage outside the home.
